mayaToday in honor of Women’s history month I am talking about a woman who changed their world for the better. In her life Maya Angelou had many jobs and careers which included a waitress, cook, singer, dancer, actor, and director, though she is most known for her career in writing.
Her real name is Marguerite Johnson and she was born in St. Louis, Missouri on April 4th, 1928. She had hard childhood because her mother’s boyfriend abused here and for four years she didn’t talk  to anyone but her brother. She had to move through homes and sometimes she was homeless. Her writing talked about oppression in many forms including white people on black people men on women and rich on poor.
Her most famous writing is I know why the caged bird sings the book is about a young girl growing up in 1930s Arkansas in the time of segregation. I don’t want to spoil the book but be sure to read it.
She has been nominated for Tony and Emmy awards and in 1993 she read her poem On the pulse morning at President Bill Clinton’s inauguration; she was the first African American and woman to do this. In 2010, she received the Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama.
Sadly she died at 86 while writing a new book in 2014.
Please take Maya Angelou’s story to inspire yourself.
